PHOENIX — Phoenix police say two men are dead after a shooting Tuesday morning at an apartment complex.

Officers were called to a “shots fired” report near 36th Street and McDowell Road around 6 a.m. When they arrived, they found 42-year-old James Ray Putney in a common area near a pool. He was shot and died later at the hospital.

Police continued to search the complex and they were directed by witnesses to an apartment where they found 31-year-old Robert Rojas dead inside.

Two other people were inside the apartment and were not hurt. They were detained by police during the investigation.

Investigators believe Rojas and Putney were attempting to rob the occupants of the apartment when one of the occupants, a 29-year-old man, shot both of them.

The investigation has been passed on to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office to determine if charges will be filed in the deaths.
