The prison unit where riotous inmates destroyed up to five housing pods will house sex offenders when it reopens next month.

The Kingman Daily Miner reports  the Arizona Department of Corrections confirms the Hualapai Housing Unit at Arizona State Prison-Kingman will no longer hold general population prisoners.

A series of riots in July caused extensive damage to the prison and forced more than 1,100 inmates to be moved to other facilities. The unit is set to reopen next month for the first time since the damage took place.

The GEO Group, a private prison operator, took over from prior operator Management and Training Corp. on Dec. 1.

GEO officials say their contract with the DOC for the management of the 1,400-bed Hualapai unit is for medium custody sex offenders
