Tucson zoo sales tax hike approved by voters

Posted

Voters in Tucson have approved increasing the city's sales tax to cover costs for improving the city's zoo.

The Arizona Daily Star reports that officials announced Thursday the two measures that were needed for the tax hike to move forward passed.

One proposition calls for the sales tax to go up one-tenth of a percent for 10 years.

The other would revise the city charter to allow for the increase.

Officials estimate the revenue generated would mean between $8 million and $10 million in funding each year to Reid Park Zoo.

The money would pay for infrastructure upgrades and expansions of existing animal habitats.
