A 30-year-old man is suffering from critical burns after a flash-type explosion Thursday night in Marana.

The explosion occurred around 10:00 p.m. in a shed alongside a mobile home near Sandario and Grier Roads, said Captain Adam Goldberg, Northwest Fire District. The man was transported to a Phoenix-area center for critical burns.

Northwest Fire, Marana Police, along with Bomb Squad and Hazardous Materials units responded to the scene at the Valley of the Sun Mobile Home Park. A dozen mobile homes were evacuated immediately in case of any other potential explosions.

After checking the scene, crews were able to determine that the scene was safe for residents to return home, but the investigation continues into what happened, as well as clean-up in the area, said Goldberg.

Three other people were in the mobile at the time and were not injured.

The 13000 block of Sandario Road near Marana and I-10 is closed in this area, as well Marana Police ask drivers to avoid the area and use an alternate route.
