PD: 18-year-old arrested for shoplifting at Walmart, found dead in holding cell

CASA GRANDE, AZ — Police are investigating after a shoplifting suspect was found dead in a detention cell in Casa Grande on Saturday.

According to Casa Grande police, officers responded to reports of shoplifting at Walmart. Once on scene, officers arrested an 18-year-old man for shoplifting after store security identified him using a receipt found in the parking lot to return an item for cash.

The man was taken to the Casa Grande Police Department, where he was interviewed and then placed in a detention cell to await transport to the Pinal County Adult Detention Center for booking. When officers came back, the man was found unresponsive.

Officers initiated life-saving measures but were unsuccessful. Paramedics arrived and confirmed the man had died.

The cause of man's death is unknown at this time.

The Pinal County Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation, which is ongoing.
