A former president may cross party lines this November.

Politico and CNN are reporting that George H. W. Bush, former president of the United States and a Republican, will possibly vote for Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee, in November.

The outlets cite a Facebook post by Kathleen Hartington Kennedy Townsend, the former Maryland lieutenant governor and daughter of the late Robert F. Kennedy, who posted a picture Monday with the 41st president and the caption, "The President told me he's voting for Hillary!!"

A spokesman for the elder Bush did not confirm nor deny the report when reached by CNN, emphasizing that the vote would be private and declined to comment further on the presidential race.

Two of Bush's sons have also risen to national political prominence: George W. followed his father into the White House as the 43rd president and his brother Jeb campaigned for the Republican nomination, which he lost to Donald Trump.

Relations between the Bush family and Trump have been strained since the primary, when Jeb was frequently the subject of Trump's attacks on the campaign trail and in the debates.

After Jeb left the race, the family said it would not be making an endorsement in this year's presidential race. Both George H.W. and George W. previously endorsed Arizona Sen. John McCain in 2008 and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney in 2012.
