Streaming video on Netflix now makes up more than a third of Internet traffic in North America during peak hours, according to a report from research firm Sandvine.

The report states Amazon Instant Video is the second largest paid streaming video service, accounting for 2 percent of downstream traffic.

“Service is growing, as its share of traffic more than doubled in the last 18 months,” the Sandvine report states.

About 1 percent of downstream traffic in the U.S. Is HBO GO, and that is expected to rise as it starts to offer a standalone streaming service.

The Christian Science Monitor said Netflix also accounts for 9.5 percent of all upstream traffic during peak hours. That is data sent from a user’s home connection to servers, and in the case of Netflix, it’s messages acknowledging data has been successfully received.
