PD: Father and son chase down car thief in Ahwatukee parking lot

PHOENIX - A father and son chased down and captured a suspect that they saw steal their vehicle in Ahwatukee.

Phoenix police report that about 7 p.m. on November 21 a family was shopping at the Safeway grocery store near 48th Street and Elliot Road.

The situation started when 33-year-old Matthew Colberg stole two purses from a woman's grocery cart at the store when she wasn't looking.

Police say the family was preparing to file a report when they saw the lights on their Cadillac flash as if it was being unlocked.

The victim's husband and son ran to the car and reportedly saw Colberg in the driver's seat with the keys. Colberg managed to get out of the car and ran away. However, the father and son chased him through the parking lot, capturing and forcing him to the ground, until police arrived.

Police say Colberg was in possession of several items belonging to the victims.

Colberg, who was already on felony release, is being held without bond on charges of burglary and attempted car theft.
