Police arrested a man who was caught in the act of sexually assaulting a blind woman in a Phoenix alley earlier this month.

Police report that on December 2 around 7 p.m., a woman was walking in the area of 16th Street and Thomas Road when 44-year-old Sherwin Ray Rivers offered to help the woman since, police say, she is 90 percent blind.

Instead, Rivers walked her into an alley where he allegedly started to choke her. He pushed her to the ground and sexually assaulted the woman.

Police in the area heard her screams and came to assist. They report that they saw Rivers on top of the woman. He refused to get off her and had to be physically removed from the woman. Police say the partially clothed woman was on the ground in the fetal position and had red marks and scratches on her neck.

Rivers was arrested and charged with sexual assault.
