DPS involved in chase after suspect assaults Sergeant, takes off

PHOENIX — A Department of Pubic Safety Sergeant conducting a traffic stop was allegedly assaulted by a suspect, leading troopers on an early morning chase in Phoenix, according to DPS.

DPS says around 2 a.m., a DPS Sergeant conducting a traffic stop for a driver suspected of impairment was allegedly assaulted by the driver of the vehicle.

The suspect drove away, "prompting a short pursuit" along I-17 near Van Buren Street, according to DPS.

At some point during the pursuit, the driver jumped out of the vehicle and ran on foot,DPS says. The suspect was apprehended and taken into custody by another DPS trooper.

The suspect, who has not been identified at this time, was booked into the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office 4th Avenue Jail for charges of aggravated assault, unlawful flight and DUI related charges, according to DPS.
