The driver in a deadly Interstate 17 collision on Sunday morning is a fugitive from Chicago.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the crash happened on northbound I-17, south of Camelback Road around 5:30 a.m.

DPS said they found the reported driver, 24-year-old Jaime Muro, in a neighborhood near the scene. Upon his arrest, Muro reportedly admitted he had been drinking until about 2 a.m. that morning and was driving the vehicle.

He said he lost control when his girlfriend, 24-year-old Verennice Mastache, unintentionally hit the steering wheel and they collided with the wall, on the right shoulder.

Mastache was ejected from the vehicle, and Muro found her behind the vehicle and placed her in the back seat. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

DPS said Muro is a fugitive of justice with felony warrants out of Chicago. He’s being held on a $1,000,000 cash bond.

Muro is expected to be charged with one count of manslaughter in Mastache's death, and leaving the scene of a deadly accident.
