TOLLESON, AZ — A 12-year-old boy is expected to survive after he was shot in the chest Sunday evening.

Police say the shooting happened near 93rd Avenue and McKinley Street.

Investigators learned a 14-year-old boy was handling a handgun when it was accidentally discharged, hitting the 12-year-old boy in the chest.

Police say the victim is “extremely lucky,” as he remains in stable condition. The bullet reportedly missed all major organs, according to officials.

Police initially said the boys claimed the shooting was a drive-by, but the 14-year-old later said he purchased the gun from an unknown person on the street. The parents said they weren’t aware of the weapon and were not home at the time of the shooting.

The gun was recovered and the 14-year-old was taken into custody and booked into jail on numerous charges, including aggravated assault and false reporting.
