With reports of coronavirus-related fraud attempts already coming in, U.S. Attorney Michael Bailey has appointed a federal prosecutor to take on the problem in Arizona.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Knapp will be the state's COVID-19 fraud coordinator, serving as legal counsel for the federal judicial district on matters relating to the virus and leading investigations into incoming reports.

“This kind of behavior during a national public health emergency is egregious and despicable,” Bailey said in a statement. “We will identify and prosecute anyone who uses the COVID-19 crisis to defraud others.”

Knapp is a longtime prosecutor and the white collar section chief at the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
