University of Arizona is swinging for the fences to make a major shift into online learning.

The Tucson-based public university is acquiring the assets of Ashford University from Chandler-based Zovio Inc., which last year moved to the Phoenix area from San Diego.

With 35,000 online students across the country, Ashford University will give UArizona a global presence, following in the footsteps of Tempe-based Arizona State University, the largest university in the state and among the largest in the nation.

As part of its efforts to acquire the assets of Ashford University, UArizona is creating a new nonprofit entity called University of Arizona Global Campus, which will be a fully online university to students around the world.
