Salt River Project has rolled out a new program aimed at reducing the power used by businesses and paying them for cutting back during the high-peak summer season.

SRP and Boston-based Enel X, launched the program Jan. 29 to encourage businesses to lower consumption of energy during extreme weather, wholesale price spikes, or unexpected system issues.

The partners work with businesses to create a "demand response" plan for when to reduce energy consumption between noon and 9 p.m. during the summer.

Dan Dreiling, director of customer programs at SRP, estimates businesses would be asked to reduce their consumption 5-10 times during the summer.
