Phoenix ranks among the most expensive U.S. cities for hotel accommodations, according to a nationwide survey.

Arizona's capital, with an average rate of $111 per night, ranks No. 3 in Cheaphotels.org's report on the most-expensive city destinations. Only Sacramento, California, at $131 per night, and Cincinnati, at $118 per night, reported higher rates.

Researchers compared hotel rates across all 36 destinations in the U.S. with populations greater than 500,000 as well as 14 destinations with a population of more than 250,000.

Only centrally located hotels with a three-star rating or higher were considered.
