After more than 30 years in leadership at Chandler-based Microchip Technology Inc., CEO Steve Sanghi will step down from his post next spring, the company announced on Thursday.

Sanghi — the longest-tenured CEO in the semiconductor industry — will transition to the position of executive chair starting March 1, turning over his role to Ganesh Moorthy, the company’s current president, who will serve as president and CEO as well as take a seat on the board of directors.

Sanghi has been with Microchip since 1990, when he came on board as senior vice president of operations.

Within months he was promoted to president, launching a turnaround of the company from its money-losing status and leading its transition into a public company in 1993.
