PHOENIX — Inventors at Amazon.com Inc. were busy this year. The Seattle company, under the name Amazon Technologies Inc., has secured roughly 2,400 patents in 2019, a few hundred more than the previous year.

The company won't top others like Samsung Electronics Co. or even Microsoft Corp. for most patents awarded, but Amazon's steady climb in securing ownership of its ideas over the last decade is still impressive.

A lot of Amazon's patents are for highly technical concepts in cloud computing or communication between computers.

Others often come into play to create better efficiences at the company's network of distribution centers around the country, including several in the Valley.
