Arizona State University may finally get a hockey arena.

Plans for a $115 million arena for ASU's men’s hockey team were approved by the Arizona Board of Regents’ Finance, Capital and Resources Committee on Thursday.

The new 5,000-seat arena, which will also be where the ASU gymnastics, wrestling and volleyball teams will compete, is set to go before the full Board of Regents on Nov. 18. Construction on the project could start in January 2021 and be completed by December 2022, according to the ASU documents and Thursday presentation by ASU Chief Financial Officer Morgan Olsen.

The arena is being proposed to be built along South Packard Drive, just east of Desert Financial Arena.

While hockey will be its main purpose, the new ASU arena is being constructed to be flexible and will have a portable hardwood sports court for other sports as well as for public events.
