FHP: 7-year-old critical after being ejected from, run over by swamp buggy

HENDRY COUNTY, Fla. — A 7-year-old girl is in critical condition after she was ejected from and run over by a swamp buggy on Saturday, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers say when the buggy hit a tree stump, Emma Newton of Clewiston was thrown off then run over by one of the tires. It happened around 5:45 p.m.

Emma was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital then transferred to Tampa General Hospital.

According to an accident report, Emma was on the buggy with Shawn Newton, 33, Madeline Newton, 29, and four other children under the age of four.

Troopers say the accident happened in a wooded area in the vicinity of S. Cabbage Palm Street and Hunting Club Way.

No one else was injured in the accident. Troopers are still investigating the accident and if there will be any charges related to it, according to the report.
