PHOENIX — The Valley of the Sun YMCA will be giving 2,000 free swimming lessons during the month of May.

During May 13-23, the first 2,000 people who register for those dates will get free swimming lessons for two weeks.

They are doing this to spead awarness and teach on safety around water. Their program is designed to teach those who don’t know how to swim survival skills and to teach parents how important water safety.

Not all kids have access to water safety lessons and the YMCA wants to dwindle the number of children involved in deadly water accidents.

The YMCA said in the last three years 51 kids who were under the age of 12 were involved in deadly water accidents in the Maricopa and Pinal county. This is the leading cause of accidental death for kids ages 1-4, amd second for ages 5-14.

All Valley of the Sun YMCA’s with pools are offering the free lessons. Find the nearest one to you here.
