QUARTZSITE, AZ — Two people were rescued after falling into a mine shaft near Quartzsite Thursday afternoon.

La Paz County Sheriff’s Department says one person went about 100 feet back into a mine shaft and dropped 35 feet into the shaft.

A second person reportedly went in to try to rescue the victim and also became stuck.

Officials with La Paz County worked with Buckskin and Quartzsite fire departments, Mohave and Maricopa county officials, and the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Crews reportedly had to use a “very detailed and difficult” rescue technique in which they lowered someone into the shaft, attaching themselves to the victims, and coming back up.

Fortunately, both people stuck inside the mine shaft were removed safely and treated for injuries.
