Braves outfielder arrested, accused of assault

Major League Baseball has placed Atlanta Braves outfielder Hector Olivera on administrative leave after he was arrested when a woman accused him of assault at a hotel outside Washington.

The Braves announced the change in a statement Wednesday, saying the team is "extremely disappointed and troubled."

Arlington Police spokeswoman Ashley Savage says officers were called earlier Wednesday to the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Pentagon City, where a woman with visible bruises reported that Olivera had assaulted her.

Savage says Olivera is waiting to appear before a magistrate and has not been formally charged.

Savage says Olivera and the woman are acquainted.

The 31-year-old Olivera joined the Braves last year. He spent the early part of his career in Cuba before defecting. The Braves are in Washington for a series against the Nationals.
