Injured Arizona Cardinals running back Chris Johnson will be eligible to return this season, but not until late in the playoffs.

On Tuesday, the Cards placed the 30-year-old on injured reserve/designated to return after an MRI revealed Johnson suffered a fractured tibia during Sunday's game at the San Francisco 49ers. Johnson won't be eligible to return until the NFC Championship game at the earliest.

Johnson rushed for 814 yards and three touchdowns through 11 games this season.

In a corresponding move, the Cards called up running back Kerwynn Williams from the practice squad. The 2013 seventh-round pick filled in for injured tailback Andre Ellington last season, rushing for 246 yards on 53 carries (4.6 yards per carry), including 75 yards on 15 carries at the St. Louis Rams last year.

The Cardinals travel to St. Louis to play the Rams on Sunday.
