The official announcement won't be made until June 18, but it looks like we may already know what the name of Tucson's new professional hockey team will be.
In April, we learned the Arizona Coyotes' minor league affiliate in Springfield, Massachusetts, would relocate to the Old Pueblo in time for the 2016-17 hockey season. After the move was made official, the Coyotes held an open contest to come up with a new name for the team.
Well, Sportslogos.net reported Thursday that the term "Tucson Roadrunners" was recently trademarked by the Arizona Coyotes' ownership group.
Those familiar with the history of the Valley hockey scene know this wouldn't be the first time an Arizona-based minor-league hockey team would have "Roadrunners" as its mascot, as the Phoenix Roadrunners existed in several forms from 1967-2009.
What do you think: Does "Tucson Roadrunners" have the same ring to it?
