The death of former Arizona State Sun Devils basketball player Jermaine Marshall was due to natural causes related to undetected heart complications, ESPN reported Saturday.

The 28-year-old Marshall, who was playing for the Nantes pro basketball team in France, was found dead in his apartment in France last month.

Marshall played his final NCAA basketball season at ASU in the 2013-14 season after spending his first three years at Penn State. He averaged 15.1 points in 32 games in his senior season and helped lead the Sun Devils to the 2014 NCAA Tournament. He scored a season-high 29 points in ASU's win over No. 2 Arizona in 2014.

Marshall briefly played for the Houston Rockets in the 2014-15 NBA season before embarking on a pro career in Europe, including stops in Italy, Greece, Finland and the Netherlands.

"Our family was exceptionally blessed to know and love Jermaine. Incredibly talented, funny, thoughtful, a fierce competitor and a superb athlete who had an unbelievable work ethic and reputation," Marshall's family said in a statement, per ESPN.

"Jermaine fell in love with the game of basketball at an early age. He went on to fulfill a life-long dream of playing at the college level and professionally for the Hermine Nantes basketball team in Nantes, France. Jermaine was loved by teammates and fans all over the world."

Funeral services will be held for Marshall next Saturday, Feb. 9, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
