Arizona State University has shortened its spring 2021 semester and canceled spring break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a letter that was sent to faculty and students on Thursday.

The Spring semester is set to begin January 11, 2021 and end on May 1, 2021. The spring 2021 graduation commencement is scheduled to take place on May 3, 2021.

"As always, we will continue to monitor the situation with COVID-19 and make adjustments to our operations as needed," the letter states.

According to ASU's website, an in-person graduation commencement will take place in May and December 2021.

"For those who wish to do so, the opportunity to participate in person will be available for Spring and Fall 2020 graduates in both May 2021 and again in December 2021. I understand the desire to share this special occasion with classmates, family and friends," the website stated.

Dear ASU Community:

To protect the health and safety of the ASU community, we continue to monitor public health trends with COVID-19. To account for anticipated public health conditions, the spring semester is being modified to end on May 1, 2021, and there will be no traditional spring break. For full details of the revised spring schedule, please view the adjusted Academic Calendar here. These changes apply to both on-campus and online students.

As always, we will continue to monitor the situation with COVID-19 and make adjustments to our operations as needed. I encourage you to continue to monitor official university communication channels for continued updates about protocols and university operations related to COVID-19.
