Five people are hospitalized after a crash involving multiple cars in Surprise.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety received reports about an accident on US 60 and Bell Road Sunday afternoon.

A DPS spokesperson said an elderly woman — driving a van — rear-ended a motorcyclist, causing him to crash into a minivan. Both the motorcyclist and the minivan driver were stopped at a red light.

According to witnesses, the elderly woman was spotted driving recklessly before the accident occurred; DUI hasn't been ruled out.

The motorcyclist was airlifted to the hospital in life-threatening condition. Three people in the minivan were also taken to the hospital but are expected to be OK.

The elderly woman suffered only minor injuries but was also hospitalized.

Roads in the area were shut down for two hours during the investigation but have since reopened.

No names have been released in connection to the crash.
