Firefighters say a home is a total loss after a fire ignited Monday afternoon.

Crews responded to a home near 83rd and Glendale avenues just before 4 p.m. They arrived to find thick smoke coming from the house and made the decision to fight the fire defensively.

Five people, three adults and two children, were home at the time and were able to get out safely. Their dog was also safe but firefighters were still looking for the family's cat.

One firefighter suffered minor burns on a forearm and was treated on the scene.

The family has been displaced and is receiving assistance from relief crews.

Officials say the cause remains under investigation.
