The Glendale Fire Department announced that their crisis canine, Topaz, passed away on Monday from a brief illness.

Topaz, a yellow Labrador, was brought to the department by his handler, Lynette Pompa, from Michigan's Paws with a Cause Foundation.

Fire officials say Topaz was trained to be a seizure service dog and had his career changed to a canine crisis response role for public safety.

Topaz would respond to calls involving children and would assist in live promos for canine heat exhaustion.

Glendale fire said Topaz was semi-retired and was scheduled to retire from service later on this year.
