A 3-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital after being struck by a Phoenix police vehicle Tuesday night.

Crews were called to the scene near 67th Avenue and Camelback Road around 7 p.m.

Sources tell ABC15, the girl was running across the street to get ice cream when she was hit.

Phoenix Police Officer James Holmes said the child's mother was in the area when the accident happened.

Authorities say the 35-year-old female officer that struck the child was driving alone and is extremely upset by what happened.

The child is in extremely critical condition, according to authorities.
