BUCKEYE, AZ — Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a fatal shooting at a home in west Buckeye.

They say witnesses reported 40-year-old Jose Vera argued with another man at the private gathering around 8 p.m. Saturday.

The confrontation grew more heated and witnesses say Vera pointed a pistol at the unidentified man and that's when 40-year-old Telesforo Rios tried to stop Vera.

Authorities say Rios was shot and wounded and the two men wrestled for control of the firearm. Vera was fatally shot in the struggle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Rios was transported to a hospital where he was treated and released to the custody of sheriff's deputies.

After being interviewed, Rios was released. Sheriff's officials say no arrests have been made, but their homicide unit still is investigating.
