TEMPE, AZ — A woman is facing aggravated assault charges after authorities said she drove the wrong way and caused a crash involving multiple vehicles along Loop 202 late Thursday night.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred in the westbound lanes of L-202 near Center Parkway around 11:15 p.m.

DPS said the wrong-way vehicle, driven by a 37-year-old woman from Illinois, was heading the wrong way on the westbound lanes of Loop 202 when her vehicle struck another vehicle head-on in the HOV lane.

Both vehicles were later struck by two other vehicles.

The wrong-way driver was taken to a hospital for treatment of her injuries. The driver that was struck by the wrong-way vehicle suffered serious injuries and was also hospitalized.

The two other drivers involved in the crash suffered minor injuries.

DPS officials say they don't believe impairment was a factor at this time.

The wrong-way driver is facing aggravated assault charges once she is released from the hospital, according to authorities.

The freeway was shut down for several hours overnight for the investigation and clean-up of debris.
