Woman in wheelchair dead after being hit by car in Tempe near Southern/Rural

TEMPE, AZ - Tempe police are investigating a deadly crash involving a woman in a wheelchair.

Police responded to reports of a car accident near Southern Avenue and Rural Road Thursday afternoon.

According to officials, the woman, who was later identified as 78-year-old Patricia Edwards, was struck by a car and taken to a hospital where she later died of her injuries.

Impairment does not appear to be a factor in the crash, authorities said.

According to officials, Edwards was attempting to cross the road in an unmarked crosswalk heading from east to west.

Northbound Rural Road was closed for several hours after the crash but has since opened.
