TEMPE, AZ — A man is dead and an officer is injured after a shooting near Rural and Baseline roads Friday night.

Police say the incident began when an officer recognized a man at a Circle K who had a felony warrant for drug sales. The man left the area in a vehicle before getting out and running away from officers on foot.

When officers got out of their vehicle, police say the man shot at the officers, hitting one in the leg. That is when officers returned fire, shooting and killing the man.

The officer was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Tempe police said Saturday the officer is recovering after a successful surgery.

The man has been identified as 32-year-old Matthew Granado.

The Mesa Police Department will be handling the investigation into the shooting.
