TEMPE, AZ — A man has been taken into custody after he barricaded himself in an apartment in Tempe after assaulting two officers.

According to Tempe police, officers responded to a call for reports of a shoplifting at the Walgreens near Baseline Road and Hardy Drive around 2:45 p.m. Once at the scene, officers were unable to locate the suspect.

A short time later, a Tempe police Sergeant identified the suspect at the 909 West apartments near Kyrene and Elliot roads.

The Sergeant and an accompanying officer tried to arrest the suspect, but the man resisted arrest and assaulted both officers and ran. Both officers were uninjured, police said.

The suspect fled into a nearby apartment unit, which caused the tenant, who is known to the suspect, to escape the apartment.

Multiple units responded and worked to make contact with the suspect.

After nearly two hours, the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody.

Several apartment units in the area were evacuated while police investigated.
