A 49-year-old man convicted of raping an Arizona State University student over a decade ago will spend the rest of his life in prison.
Kevin Francois was sentenced Thursday to 137.75 years in the Arizona Department of Corrections, the maximum sentence allowed, for raping a 19-year-old woman in 2003, the Maricopa County Attorney's Office said.
“The sentence demonstrates the serious nature of this type of crime and our commitment to holding offenders accountable," said Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery in a media release.
In August 2003, the victim, who was about to start her sophomore year at ASU, woke to a man on top of her pushing a pillow on her face and assaulting her. She reported the attack right away and evidence was collected.
In 2010, Francois was identified as a suspect and arrested in California. Five years later, the case went to trial where a jury convicted him after less than an hour of deliberation.
