TEMPE, AZ — Firefighters say a gas leak and lots of debris in the back yard complicated their efforts to put out a house fire Wednesday night.

The blaze broke out around 6:15 p.m. near Rural and Broadway roads.

Firefighters say conditions at the home forced crews to transition to fighting the fire from the exterior.

Andrea Glass, interim assistant chief with the department, said downed power lines and a "possible hoarding-like condition" in the backyard made the situation more challenging. A gas leak was also detected near the meter and had been feeding the flames.

Utility workers were able to shut off the gas and firefighters were able to contain the flames.

One person who was at the home at the time was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
