Firefighters were seen battling intense flames Saturday night on the Loop 101 freeway, near University Drive.
The Tempe Fire Department said people who stopped to help pulled a driver out of a car in the southbound lanes after it crashed. The driver was taken to a hospital in serious condition while the car burst into flames.
No other injuries were reported, but the southbound lanes were temporarily shut down while firefighters worked to put out the flames, which created large clouds of black smoke on the freeway.
The cause of the crash will be investigated by the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
