PHOENIX — The co-founders of a student Republican group at Arizona State University have apologized after documents surfaced last week showing some group leaders making racist, homophobic and anti-Semitic comments online.

The Arizona Republic reports that leaders of College Republicans United at a chapter meeting Monday said they would "condemn to the highest degree" such comments, noting that the behaviors were "not conducive to maintaining civility and respect in our political environment."

University officials say they are investigating the group, and they take "these matters extremely seriously."

The group split from the ASU College Republicans chapter last year.

Arizona Republican Party spokesman Zachery Henry says the comments by members of the group "do not reflect our party's values or ideals."

Members of the group had canvassed for Republican candidates last year.
