A pilot is lucky to be uninjured after a scary situation at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Thursday afternoon.

According to Mesa Fire Department, crews were dispatched to an emergency call at the airport after a 1970 model A-4 fighter aircraft tried to land and its front landing gear failed.

The nose of the aircraft struck the ground and skidded down the runway until it came to a stop.

Mesa Fire says a small fire broke out, but rescue crews were able to extinguish it quickly.

The aircraft was reportedly based out of Phoenix-Mesa Gateway and was returning to the airport after a test flight.

The 63-year-old pilot was able to escape without injury. No one else was onboard.
