Wrong-way driver traveled 8 miles on Loop 202 before crash, DPS says

GILBERT — A wrong-way driver traveled more than eight miles on Loop 202 Thursday night before hitting a stopped vehicle, injuring four people inside.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, reports show the driver got on the Loop 202 Red Mountain at McDowell Road, headed eastbound in the westbound lanes.

The vehicle struck a broken-down vehicle that was stopped off left at Loop 202 Santan at Guadalupe Road. DPS says four people in the car suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital.

The driver, 32-year-old Kodee Bates, was also taken to the hospital for injuries. She was treated and then booked on charges of aggravated DUI, eight counts of endangerment and two counts of criminal damage.

DPS told ABC15 that from January 1 through April 1, 2019, there have been 11 wrong-way crashes. One of the crashes was deadly, killing four people.

Thirty people have been arrested for wrong-way DUIs.
