Wrong way driver, 37-year-old Tony Gutierrez, in custody after pursuit that started in Gilbert

The Gilbert Police Department says a suspected wrong way driver has been taken into custody in downtown Phoenix after a pursuit that started in Gilbert.

The incident started near Arizona Avenue and Ray Road when police got calls of a wrong way driver in the area.

Police say they tried to stop the driver, 37-year-old Tony Gutierrez, but he refused to pull over and ran several lights while trying to get away.

The pursuit eventually ended near 4th Avenue and Jefferson Street when police used a PIT maneuver to stop the suspect vehicle.

Gutierrez was taken into custody by a K9 officer after refusing to cooperate with police. Gutierrez has been taken to the hospital for bite injuries but is expected to recover.

Gutierrez is also suspected of being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the pursuit.

Phoenix police and the Department of Public Safety also assisted in the pursuit.
