CHANDLER, AZ — A vehicle burglary suspect arrested over the weekend told police he targeted the Chandler area because "rich people live there."

According to Chandler police, around 2 a.m. on Sunday, a homeowner in the area of Dobson and Price roads just south of Queen Creek Road, discovered 27-year-old Sloane Benton going through the inside of their roommate's vehicle parked in front of their residence. The homeowner and his roommate began to chase Benton. The two were able to catch up to Benton, tackle him to the ground, and held him down until officers arrived.

After Benton was detained, officers discovered that he had arrived in the neighborhood in a stolen vehicle. Police say Benton admitted to investigators that he went to Chandler to burglarize vehicles because "rich people live there." Benton claimed he borrowed the stolen vehicle from a friend but was unaware it was stolen.

Benton was booked into the Maricopa County Jail and is facing charges of third-degree burglary and theft-control of stolen property.
