CHANDLER — Chandler police say they found a homemade explosive in a suspect's vehicle after stopping the suspect for a traffic offense Saturday evening.

According to Chandler police, they stopped a car on Riggs and Cooper roads on January 19 around 6 p.m.

The driver of the vehicle was initially arrested for an outstanding warrant, but while police searched the suspect's vehicle, they found explosive material in the trunk.

Police say the suspect confirmed the items in the car's trunk was a homemade explosive.

The Mesa Bomb Squad responded to the area, along with FBI officials.

Chandler police say the device was safely removed from the vehicle and destroyed in an empty field nearby.

The driver, 39-year-old Levi Taner Hetzel, was arrested for outstanding misdemeanor warrants.

A passenger in the vehicle, 53-year-old Ralph Ruegsegger, was also arrested and charged with misconduct involving weapons and explosives.
