Authorities say witnesses helped extinguish a fiery crash in west Phoenix early Friday morning that left a driver with serious injuries.

Just after 5 a.m., witnesses reported seeing a sedan fail to stop for a red light on Van Buren Street, a police spokeswoman said. The car hit a truck driving along 75th Avenue.

The crash caused the sedan to catch fire but witnesses quickly put out the blaze, officials said.

Authorities say it's unknown at this time where witnesses got the water to help extinguish the fire.

The man driving the sedan was taken to the hospital with "very critical" injuries, authorities said. The driver of the truck also suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Air15 video from the scene showed the damaged truck, which appears to be a Salt River Project vehicle.

An investigation is ongoing and 75th Avenue and Van Buren Street is restricted during the morning rush hour. Check here for the latest traffic updates.
