Phoenix Police: One person dead after crash in west Phoenix

PHOENIX - The Phoenix Police Department says at least one person is dead after a crash in west Phoenix — just blocks away from another multi-vehicle accident that happened around the same time.

Police received reports about the crash near 43rd and Montebello avenues on Sunday afternoon shortly after a separate accident occurred near 43rd and Maryland avenues.

Authorities said 22-year-old Deron James died in the crash. Five others were transported from the scene for a variety of injuries.

According to Phoenix police, an unlicensed 17-year-old female was driving southbound on 43rd Avenue when she failed to stop to vehicles. She collided with a northbound vehicle and then collided head on with a pickup truck.

Police said James was unrestrained in the first vehicle the unlicensed driver hit.
