Authorities first received reports of "shots fired" in the area of 20th Avenue and Bethany Home Road around 2 a.m. Shortly after, officers received a second "shots fired" call.
Officers were attempting to locate the suspect, 39-year-old Andre Rippy, who was believed to be driving a dark-colored car, but during their search, the man switched to a minivan.
Officers located Rippy an hour later near the area of Loop 101 and Loop 202 after the man attempted to carjack a woman, a police spokesperson said.
DPS troopers used spike strips to stop the man, but he managed to drive to 15th Avenue and Thomas Road where police followed him on foot.
During the chase, the suspect pointed his weapon at officers who responded by shooting him, officials said. No officers were injured during the incident.
