Phoenix firefighters say wind gusts helped to spread a fire at a condominium complex Friday afternoon.

Firefighters described entering a unit near Dunlap and 35th avenues was "like walking into a blow torch," according to Captain Aaron Ernsberger.

Crews were able to contain the flames to one unit, but said it was a total loss.

One of the people who lives there was inside at the time and told investigators she heard a loud popping sound. She went to investigate the noise and found the patio area of her home on fire.

The woman, along with several cats and dogs, were able to be rescued from the home, but a pet bird was not. The condo was declared a total loss.

A total of 15 people will be displaced as a result of the fire.
