Police say two people were shot, one fatally, outside of a home in West Phoenix on Thursday morning.

Officers responded to the scene near 55th and Clarendon avenues before 5 a.m. where some type of altercation broke out as people were gathered at the home.

A 22-year-old man in a car was shot and killed and a woman was taken to the hospital where she is in extremely critical condition.

Two children, ages 3 and 5, were reportedly in the back seat of the car at the time, but were unharmed. They are now in police custody until they can be with family.

After several hours of negotiation, two people inside the home were detained, but their connection to the shooting is unclear.

Police believe the suspect or suspects know the victims.

Police say this shooting is not related to other recent shootings nearby.
